Orleans sits at the elbow of the Cape and is known as the gateway to the Outer Cape. It's home to Nauset Beach, one of the Cape's finest and most celebrated ocean beaches, and is a hub for surf culture. Rock Harbor on the bay side is known for charter fishing and stunning sunsets.
Surf or swim at Nauset Beach, watch charter fishing boats depart at sunrise from Rock Harbor, and browse the independent shops and galleries in town. The Cape Cod Rail Trail starts in Orleans and runs north toward Wellfleet. Kayaking in Town Cove and Pleasant Bay is exceptional. Academy of Performing Arts has year-round shows.
Orleans has excellent dining options. The Orleans Inn overlooks Town Cove and serves reliable New England fare. Nauset Beach Club is well-regarded for Northern Italian cuisine, unusual for the Cape. Land Ho! is an Orleans institution for casual seafood dining since 1969. Sir Cricket's Fish & Chips near Nauset is a summer staple.
Orleans is very good for families. Nauset Beach has a lifeguard, restrooms, and a beach concession, everything you need for a full day. Rock Harbor at sunset is magical and free. The Rail Trail is ideal for family cycling toward Brewster. Town Cove is calm for paddling. The town itself is easy and walkable.
July and August are peak surf season at Nauset, the beach attracts big summer crowds. June is excellent with open businesses and far fewer people. September is a sweet spot for families: warm water, smaller crowds, and the town is still fully active. Rock Harbor sunsets are worth the visit at any time of year.
